{"id":15,"date":"2020-05-08T02:27:59","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T02:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimb.info\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2025-08-03T00:16:57","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T00:16:57","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wmtcoalition.org\/","title":{"rendered":"The Trail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 50 mile Wantastiquet-Monadnock Hiking Trail (WMT) can now be hiked over its whole length from Mt. Wantastiquet (across the river from Brattleboro) to Mt. Monadnock. Well-known public lands along the trail include the Wantastiquet, Bear Mt., Pisgah and Monadnock State Parks, the Horatio Colony Preserve, the Cheshire Rail Trail, and the Forest Society&#8217;s Gap Mountain and Monadnock Reservations as well as the Madame Sherri Forest. An overnight shelter can be found off the trail just west of Pisgah Park (see maps)\u00a0as well as three tent sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail begins in the west at the base of Mt. Wantastiquet in Hinsdale (or just across the river from Brattleboro where you can park overnight in the Parking garage). The best place to park at the east end of the trail, near Mt. Monadnock, is at the Gap North Lot on Bullard Road off Route 124 in Jaffrey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>     The WMT is the culmination of 25 years of planning, negotiations and trail building begun by members of the Chesterfield Conservation Commission and the Friends of Pisgah Park.&nbsp; The completed trail was introduced at a community event in Keene in April, 2018, and with a series of 9 section hikes that same year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wantastiquet-Monadnock Trail Coalition, the enlarged group now overseeing the trail,\u00a0also includes\u00a0Appalachian Mountain Club, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the Swanzey Rail Trail Advisory Committee, the Horatio Colony Trust, Antioch New England, the Friends of Pisgah, Southwest Regional Planning, the State of New Hampshire, the Monadnock Conservancy, Pathways for Keene, Cheshire County Conservation District and Conservation Commissions from Keene, Chesterfield, Hinsdale and Swanzey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Board members include Paul Bocko, President, Antioch NE, Lynne Borofsky, Treasurer, Chesterfield CC,\u00a0Matt Scaccia. Here is a general overview of the Seven &#8220;Leave No Trace Principles&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan ahead and prepare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel and camp on durable surfaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dispose of waste properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave what you find.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimize campfire impacts (where allowed!).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect wildlife.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be considerate of other visitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep &#8217;em on a leash if you love them. Be aware of your surroundings. Pick up after your pet companions. Know where you are allowed to bring your fury friends and where you are not.
